About Matthew
Representative Matthew Bierlein is currently in his second term in the Michigan House and was elected to serve the 97th District in November 2022, currently serving portions of Bay, Genesee, Saginaw and Tuscola counties. Now he’s continuing to work hard to have your voice be heard as he runs to be your next State Senator in the 26th District.
As a Tuscola County native, Matthew has continued to serve the area and worked tirelessly so families and communities in the region can thrive. As a state representative, he has introduced plans that cut burdensome red tape and heavy-handed approaches from state government that have impacted small businesses, workers and families, while advocating for responsible plans that lower taxes and reduce other cost of living burdens.
Matthew is a graduate of Vassar High School and Delta College. In 2013, he earned a bachelor’s degree in organizational management from Spring Arbor University.
Prior to being elected to the Michigan House of Representatives, Matthew had a career in the manufacturing industry, working as a machine operator, purchasing manager, engineering technician, and production manager.
Matthew served as a Tuscola County commissioner from 2013 to 2019, acting as vice-chair of the board and co-chair of the finance committee. During this time, he also served as president of the Michigan Association of Counties and on the board of directors for the National Association of County Officers.
From 2019 to 2022, Matthew served as an in-district director for the State Senate, working closely with local families, businesses, and service groups. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he helped meet the needs of people in the community who were struggling due to the economic shut down before running for State Representative.
As State Representative, Matthew has championed policy proposals focused on protecting our children, fiscal responsibility, economic growth, rural healthcare and public safety. He has earned a reputation as a principled legislator who delivers results and is a strong advocate for his district in Lansing. Bierlein demonstrates the utmost transparency as he publishes every vote taken and is known to be extremely accessible, regularly engaging with local leaders and meeting with residents across the district, bringing that direct input back to the State Capitol.
Matthew and his wife Mindy Bierlein, a physical therapist, have been married since 2010. They live in Vassar with their three children, Matthew James, Madison and Maddox. Together, they own and operate two physical therapy practices in Frankenmuth and Bridgeport.
The Bierlein family enjoys spending time together outside in the garden or the woods around their homestead. They have a dog named Blaze and enjoy raising livestock, including 40 chickens and 3 goats.

Issues for the region
"As your next State Senator, I will work tirelessly to bring a voice from our region to Lansing. We need leaders in the State Capitol who will focus on helping families. With three young children of my own, I have a passion to fight for our area so future generations will have both the opportunity, but also the desire, to remain here and raise families of their own in this great State. As a native of the area and a small business owner myself, I understand the region's unique character and its agricultural, natural, and cultural assets. I CHOSE to stay here, and it will be my honor to convey our area’s common-sense approach to policies that affect all of us in Lansing."
